I'm working with a client who has twin 18 month olds and I really have my work cut out for me! I don't have kids so I didn't realize how messy they can be at dinner time till I spent an evening with them. I quickly realized why my client has a lovely clear plastic sheet over her new kitchen table. After I told her it was ugly (she is also a friend, so no hurt feelings here) and had to go she asked me what my solution would be.
This is it! I love how the tablecloth is tailored to fit just the top while still showing the legs. The short tablecloth also allows her to get a vacuum under the table for an easy clean up after dinner.
It's a win-win situation for the both of us (and the twins).

As a Mom of now 17 year old twins, I would advise feeding them in the tub and then shower down! ha, now Truthfully, placemats and bibs are saviors and letting them feed themselves!
Now mine eat me out of house and home!

That is a great idea! I'd look into doing the same idea but in an oilcloth fabric - wipe-up-able and still stylin'!

I think this looks great. As the mother of an 26 month old...I don't use a tablecloth b/c it would be in the washer after every meal...and I don't know how people w/o dogs keep their floor clean after mealtime with toddlers! It's funny, our breakfast area table is from Hickory Chair and pre kids I was worried about every little scratch....now I could care less. I have been thinking about having vinyl applied to nicer fabrics for the kitchen. I think that Suze at Dwellers w/o Decorators did this for some of her cushions to make them kid friendly. Still trying to sell myself on this idea!

I think this table cloth looks terrific, but for me it still would have to be something that I could wipe down.

When you first said it looked ugly I thought you were talking about what was in the image, I thought it looked great. That is a good solution. My kids are older now so I don't have to worry anymore, but I do remember keeping a plastic tablecloth on the floor to protect my rug when they were little.
Great idea and it saves the table for when everyone is older.

I have kind of given up in our eating area. It always stays somewhat gross. They ususally eat at the bar and if they do eat at our breakfast table, I use no table cloth, no rug, nothing. Looks depressing, but I have hope it will look better in 10-15 years :)

I have a 3- and a 1- year old and quit using a tablecloth. It's so much easier to wipe down the table than it is to stain treat a tablecloth every night! You could also use wipeable placemats that can be put away when not in use. That said.... I love, love that tablecloth!!

my table is officially ruined. It's the only table so its also used for crafts, lego building, ect. This is such a cute idea. I would most def use an oilcloth. would hate to do wash after every meal too:)
When my three were in the toddler-messy- at- every-meal stage, I had a piece of glass made for the top of my wood table-- it protects the surface and is an easy clean up.
Total win win! Looks great, table cloth and all! :)

yes, and have a custom table pad made for underneath... kids will do the craziest things like "draw on the table with their fork". yikes.

Love this! I don't even have children but I feel that our beautiful dining table is getting so beaten up just by regular use - this is the perfect solution seeing as I love the legs of our table!
