It was time to bring a little Spring into my apartment, so I picked up this beautiful orchid this past weekend... look at all the buds on it!!

i LOVE orchides - especially the vibrant coloured ones (like yours!). my sis bought me one when i moved into my apartment and it had tons of buds that hadn't opened. its been awesome seeing them bloom - there are now 4 huge blooms (the final 4!) that have been open for about 10 days. the trick, i've learned by watching this one, is INDIRECT sunglight & water 1x week.. i've never had an orchid last this long and the blooms are huge and healthy with no signs of drooping...

ha how funny, i had a little fiesta on Sat night, and my friend brought my a white orchid, and it just cheers me up when I see it in the morning!
Love it, an orchid needs lots of light and not a lot of water. Make sure that it is well drained.
Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchids love East or West facing light bright, but not direct or they'll burn. The best way to water them is to put them in the sink or tub and run luke-warm water through the pot several times. Best to check before watering though, usually every 7-10 days...I water with a diluted slow release fertilizer 14-14-14 most waterings. When in bud development I water with 10-30-20 (encourages strong, fat blooms). And don't fertilize when flowering. I do cut back with the fertilizer in the winter as this is usually their "recovery" season. When they're done blooming you can cut 1" above the third node (bump on the stem) and you may get a new flower spike. Enjoy, they are a great, easy to grow houseplant that requires little love for lots of show!
