Public Service Announcement

Time to update / replace / or get a new Carbon Monoxide detector for your house.

Last night ours went off at about 10:30pm and it scared the crap out of me! I had been cooking that afternoon on the gas stove and I heard the heater come on in the building after being off all summer, so it naturally made me more worried. I figured out it was not the battery and called the fire department. Now the lady on the phone could not have been nicer, and said she would send the fire department out right away to check it for me... so, the first thing out of my mouth was "you don't have to send the whole department, I don't want to cause a scene, just one person will do." Not even 5 min. later and two fire trucks, an ambulance, and a police car were in the front of my building!

Long story short the firemen could not have been more nice and helpful! They checked out the whole apartment and explained everything to me so I would not be afraid to go to bed. There ended up being no carbon monoxide in the apartment at all, but sometimes small amounts get built up in the detector because it is always testing the air and will trigger it to go off. He said the amount is nothing to get worried over, but I did the right thing in calling. Gotta love a man in uniform!!

Anyways, mine is getting replaced today and everyone should double check theirs too because Carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning death in America- a very serious thing!

Upstairs on the Square

Last year for my birthday the BF took me to Upstairs on the Square in Cambridge, MA. As soon as I walked in I was in awe at the amazing space and all the colors. To this day I think about the amazing food, as well as the beautiful decor. So when the BF suggested a date night this weekend and that we should go someplace different, of course this was my first choice!

Going here on Saturday surely will brighten up this miserable, rainy weekend we are having here in Boston, take a look:

its not quite winter yet, but this is the outside

side entrance door

first floor bar and more casual dining

the Zebra Room- I love the hot pink walls, with the zebra rug and all the gold chairs and wall sconces, its such a fun room

the upstairs dining room- with light pink walls, mirrored ceilings, a cheetah print rug, and more gold chairs

If you are ever in town, or live here be sure to check this place out:

Apples as inspiration

Going apple picking got me inspired to see some more red. I went hunting and found these awesome examples of rooms with red in them- some are the whole room, others are just a touch like a pretty vase or flower arrangement. So, here is my very red eye candy for the day:

John Derian for Target

I went to Target this weekend planning on blowing alot of cash on the new John Derian for Target stuff...long story short, I came home with nothing. Guess the Target I went to had about 3 things to chose from, and all 3 were sold out!

So sad...the hunt will continue this weekend at a new Target.

His beautiful things can be found HERE...unfortunately these things are not at the Target price

Out with the old, in with the older

I had this framed picture up in my bathroom- you know one of those cheesy mass-produced framed things you can get at any home store...yea I don't know what I was thinking buying that either. I could not go in the bathroom without seeing that stupid thing and wanting to take it down.

So down it came... it was time for a makeover. Out came the pliers, scissors, and x-acto knife and to work I went.
First, I ripped off the back brown paper cover
Then, I bent up the staples that were holding the piece of cardboard down (yea this thing was totally put together with some quality materials)
I used the x-acto knife to cut out the old picture
Empty frame

My Grandma had given me two vintage postcards of the lake we used to vacation on every summer when I was a kid. She found them at an antique shop and bought them for me knowing I would love them. I've had them for awhile but hadn't found a place for them, so when I saw the empty frame I knew exactly what would go in there...one of my vintage post cards!

Its a tad small for the frame, so this might just be a temporary fix- but for $0 its much prettier to look at!

Apples, Apples Everywhere!

Well and some pears too.

I had a wonderful time apple picking yesterday with some friends, it turned out to be a perfect way to end the summer and welcome fall.

All the good apples were at the top- this ladder came in handy

Here are the goods...

I didn't pick these, but they were too cute to pass up at the farm store

For dinner I decided to make myself some apple crisp..fully intending to eat that for my dinner and nothing else. I sliced up some apples, made what I thought would be a nice crisp topping and set the oven to bake.

It didn't exactly turn out how I had planned, but then again that's what I get for not using a real recipe. It wasn't exactly a crisp topping, but with some vanilla ice cream (ok, frozen yogurt) it tasted amazing!

I didn't take more pictures because it was not the prettiest thing...but I'm going to try again at the end of the week and hopefully that one is a little more eye appealing as well as tasty!
